Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.

Every one (that is) proud in heart (is) an abomination to the Lord: (though) hand (join) in hand, he shall not be unpunished - (note, .) Though pride may not appear outwardly in the "countenance" (), nor in the 'look' or 'eyes' (margin, ), yet if it be in the heart, the Lord abominates it. The heart is the primary seat of pride. Whatever resources, combinations, family connections, and supporters, the proud may have, he shall not escape punishment. Mercer takes it, 'From hand to hand expresses the consecutive connection of causes through which the Lord, works: though the proud escape one occasion of punishment, yet he is reserved for another, wherein he shall pay at once the penalty of all his sins.'
