And he brought all the priests out of the cities of Judah, where they wore engaged in local worship, and defiled the high places where the priests had burned incense, from Geba, on the northern boundary of Judah, to Beersheba, on its extreme southern boundary, and brake down the high places of the gates that were in the entering in of the gate of Joshua, the governor of the city, that which was near Millo, the citadel of Jerusalem, which were, or, that also which was, on a man's left hand at the gate of the city, this second altar and place of worship being near a gate where many foreigners passed in and out, the object probably being to afford these people an opportunity to worship their own gods.
