And they said unto him, We are come down to bind thee, that we may deliver thee into the hand of the Philistines, an act of betrayal by which they hoped to save their lives and fortunes. And Samson said unto them, Swear unto me that ye will not fall upon me yourselves, namely, for the purpose of putting him to death; for matters had reached a stage where this was not beyond the bounds of possibility, and Samson was powerless in that case, since he would not soil his hands with the blood of his countrymen.
