‘Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.'

He explained that the seed represented the Good News of the Kingly Rule of God, the word of God going out to the people from the Scriptures. It was not an idea without precedent as we see in Isaiah 55:10; Isaiah 61:11. Compare also Amos 9:13 which has in mind abundant harvests. Contrast Jeremiah 12:13.

In the Old Testament ‘the word of God' was that word which came to the prophet for him to pass on (see 1 Kings 12:22; 1 Chronicles 17:3). Compare also ‘the word of the Lord' which also came to the prophets (over two hundred times).
