‘And there were gathered to him great crowds, so that he entered into a boat, and sat, and all the crowd stood on the beach.'

In accordance with his expectations the crowds gathered in such numbers that He entered a boat and taught them from it (compare Luke 5:1, which explains where Jesus first got the idea). The crowd then stood on the beach in order to hear Him. This seems to have become a regular practise for Him.
