ἵνα οἱ ζῶντες μηκέτι ἑαυτοῖς ζῶσιν. That they which live should no longer (now that they have died in Christ as their representative) live to themselves. Christ died for all, that they should die to themselves, and live to Him. Comp. Romans 14:7-9; Galatians 2:20.

τῷ ὑπὲρ αὐτῶν. The ὑπὲρ αὐτῶν goes on to ἐγερθέντι, and this shows that in 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν must not be rendered ‘in your stead.’ Christ was raised on our behalf, that we might be made alive in Him (οἱ ζῶντες) and ourselves be raised again; but He was not raised instead of us, ἀντὶ ἡμῶν. Comp. τὴν δύναμιν τῆς (Philippians 3:10).
