ὁ δὲ δοῦλος. The transition is somewhat abrupt, the mention of ‘bond-servant’ suggesting a fresh thought. Now the bond-servant (not the bond-servant of sin, but any slave) abideth not in the house for ever: the son (not the Son of God, but any son) abideth for ever. It is perhaps to avoid this abruptness that some important authorities omit τῆς ἁμαρτίας.
