ὅταν ὁ ἰσχυρὸς καθωπλισμένος φυλάσσῃ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ αὐλήν. ‘The strong’ is Satan, Matthew 12:29. Αὐλὴ means ‘premises’ or ‘homestead,’ Matthew 26:3. The same metaphor is used of the Christian opposing Satan, as here of Satan opposing Christ, Ephesians 6:13. The world is here Satan’s court-yard (John 12:31; John 16:11) and men his possessions (2 Timothy 2:26).

καθωπλισμένος. ‘Fully armed, in his panoply’ (Luke 11:22).
