παραπτώματα. Another conception of sin, either (1) a false step, a blunder, or (2) a fall beside the way (cp. παραπεσόντες, Hebrews 6:6), so a transgression. In ὀφειλήματα sin is viewed in its aspect toward another, in παραπτώματα in its relation to the offender himself, παράπτωμα is later and rarer than παράπτωσις. Polybius uses the word with the same meaning as in the text; in Diod. Sic. it means ‘a defeat.’ For the force of παρὰ cp. παρακόπτειν and παράσημος of coins struck on the side instead of in the centre.
