ὁ δὲ ἐραυνῶν τὰς καρδίας. Cf. Revelation 2:23; Psalms 7:10; Jeremiah 17:10; 1 Corinthians 2:10. The point seems to be that GOD’S knowledge of the hearts of men and their needs enables Him to understand the particular line (τὸ φρόνημα) of the Spirit’s intercession which is uttered with and through man’s spirit; cf. Acts 15:8; Acts 1:24; Luke 16:15; Galatians 4:6.

ὄτι, ‘that.’ κατὰ θεὸν = after the standard and measure of the character of GOD, not with the imperfection of human utterance.

ὑπὲρ ἁγίων = on behalf of men who belong to GOD, (so |[166] κατὰ θεόν), and therefore in pursuance of His will for them.
