The A.V. does not recognize that the senders of the letter place themselves in the position of the recipient; the expression "beyond the river" applied to a country would to a Persian subject convey as distinct an idea of a particular district as -Cisalpine and Transalpine Gaul" would to a Roman subject whether living in Italy or Gaul.
