Blessed art thou among women i. e. preeminently blessed, as "fairest among women," Song of Solomon 1:8. Similar expressions are used of Ruth (Ruth 3:10), and, on a far lower level of meaning, of Jael (Judges 5:24), and of Judith. "All the women of Israel blessed her," Judges 15:12. In the latter instances the blessing is pronounced bywomen, but here the word means -blessed by God."
