They were spotted, perhaps with white spots on a dark ground, "sparsis pellibus albo dixit" (Virgil, Ec. ii. 41); comp. Genesis 31:10; Genesis 31:12. In addition to the mention of their distinguishing colour, they are said here to be active, and again in Zechariah 6:7, where the reason for this characteristic being mentioned appears in the request which they make.
