11 Wherefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as also ye do.

11.

Wherefore comfort (and exhort) one another, and each one of you build up the other (in the most holy faith), even as (I know) you are doing.

This passage is very comforting, but there is no comfort in it for those who are not saved. Only those who are watching for the day of the Lord Jesus, so that that day will not overtake them as a thief, will find any comfort in this verse (and the preceding ones).

The word comfort used here is the same one translated exhort in other places. Note Hebrews 3:13. For its meaning, see notes on 1 Thessalonians 2:3, par. 2.

This command to comfort one another is similar to that in 1 Thessalonians 4:18.

The word edify means to build up. So often people tear one another down, and discourage one another. What we say to one another is tremendously important. Often a word of encouragement can change a person's entire outlook and attitude, and actions.

This word translated edify is also used in Jude 1:20: Building up yourselves in your most holy faith. Also it is in Romans 15:2: Let each one of you please his neighbor for his good to edification.
