LEVITICUS—NOTE ON Leviticus 17:1 The Handling and Meaning of Blood. Chapter Leviticus 17:1 deals with the handling of sacrificial animals, beginning with a reminder that the blood of slain animals should be brought to the sanctuary (vv. Leviticus 17:3). Following these instructions prevents ongoing idolatry (v. Leviticus 17:7) and emphasizes that the blood of a sacrificial animal is the “life” that takes the place of the offerer’s death (vv. Leviticus 17:11). Animal blood is not to be used by Israel as it was used among the pagans of the time.
