PROVERBS—NOTE ON Proverbs 28:19 These proverbs all concern the desire to secure wealth and favor for oneself. They condemn get-rich-quick schemes (vv. Proverbs 28:19, Proverbs 28:20; compare Proverbs 13:11), chasing after wealth (Proverbs 28:20, Proverbs 28:22), accepting bribes (v. Proverbs 28:21), seeking to get ahead by flattery (v. Proverbs 28:23), wrongfully taking a parent’s money (v. Proverbs 28:24), causing turmoil through greed (v. Proverbs 28:25), and lacking charity (v. Proverbs 28:27). The best way to prosperity and security is through hard work (v. Proverbs 28:19), integrity and honesty (vv. Proverbs 28:20, Proverbs 28:21, Proverbs 28:23, Proverbs 28:24), and trusting in God and in godly wisdom (vv. Proverbs 28:25, Proverbs 28:26). Surprisingly, even generosity can lead to prosperity (v. Proverbs 28:27).
