That the unity of believers in the Father and the Son might be perfect, it was needful that even the glory which Christ possessed by the Father's gift (John 17:5) should be given to His people. The perfect tense is used, because the gift had already been determined. The nature of the glory spoken of is interpreted both by John 17:5 and by John 17:24. It could not be completely and actually bestowed until the point indicated in John 17:24 was reached.
