To which Jesus replies with a shade of rebuke, Ἐὰν … μοι. Peter, in seeking even to know the future of another disciple, was stepping beyond his province, τί πρός σε; σύ ἀκολούθει μοι. Your business is to follow me, not to intermeddle with others. Cf. A Kempis' description of the man who “neglects his duty, musing on all that other men are bound to do”. De Imit. Christi, ii. 3. Over-anxiety about any part of Christ's Church is to forget that there is a chief Shepherd who arranges for all. This part of the conversation might not have been recorded, but for a misunderstanding which arose out of it.
