ἰδόντες refers to the parents. This astonishment points to some contrast between a previous quiet, reserved manner of Jesus and His present bearing; sudden flashing out of the inner life. ἡ μήτηρ : the mother spoke, naturally; a woman, and the mother's heart more keenly touched. This apart from the peculiar relation referred to in Bengel's major erat necessitudo matris.
