A Levite living in the remote part of the mountains of Ephraim took a woman from Bethlehem to be his concubine, which is like a wife only without the same rights. She was unfaithful to him and returned to her father's house. After four months, the Levite went to her and persuaded her to return to him. His father-in-law, perhaps in an effort to insure good treatment of his daughter, encouraged him to stay and receive strength from food and drink for four and a half days. This caused him to be late passing by Jebus and at last arriving in Gibeah (Ruth 19:1-14).
