Brethren, let each man, wherein he was called, therein abide with God.

'with God' -'in close communion with God' (TCNT); 'to live his life with God in the state in which he was when he was called.' (Phi)

'The prepositional phrase "with God" puts the whole issue into perspective. One is not simply to remain in one's situation (married, single, circumcised, uncircumcised, slave, free, etc..) because in many cases change may come about without one's seeking it. Paul's point right along has been that one should remain with God; that is, whether one is slave or free, one's status is finally determined by one's being "before" or "in the sight of" God in that situation. That sets one free both to remain in it and especially to live out the Christian calling therein.' [Note:. Fee p. 321]
