The witnesses are fairly evenly divided as to the tense of the verb: (a) the aorist evxh,geiren( î^46c2 B 424^c 1739 Origen; (b) the present evxegei,rei( î^{11, 46 *} A D* P 69 88; and (c) the future evxegerei/( î^46c1 a C D³ K L most minuscules and most versions. The context makes the future necessary as the correlative of katargh,sei in ver. 1 Corinthians 6:13 (compare also the parallel in 2 Corinthians 4:14). The aorist evxh,geiren (which involves an interpretation that applies it to baptism) appears to have arisen from mechanical adaptation to the preceding h;geiren.

It is curious that the original reading of î⁴⁶ was altered twice. According to Zuntz, “It is unlikely that the corrector found these variants, all three, in the manuscript from which î⁴⁶ was copied. We seem to be granted a glimpse into a scriptorium where some authoritative manuscripts were used by the correctors in an endeavour to bring the productions of the scribes up to a definite standard.” ³
