Being a servant— That is, a slave. Use it rather, implies, that if a man could obtain his freedom, he might lawfully desire it; but if he could not, he was not to look upon it as a mark of the displeasure of God. The word 'Απελευθερος, rendered freed-man, in Latin Libertus, signifies not simply a free-man, but one who, having been a slave, has had his freedom given him by his master. See Locke and Clarke.
