For in him dwelleth all the fulness, &c.— For in him all the plenitude of the Godhead substantially resides. These words contain an evident allusion to the Shechinah in which God dwelt; and so ultimately refer to the adorable mystery of the union of the divine and human natures, in the person of the glorious Emmanuel; which makes him such an object of our hope and confidence, as the most exalted creature, with the most glorious endowments, could never be of himself.
