THE BOOK OF THE PROPHET HABAKKUK.
HABAKKUK is supposed to have been of the tribe of Simeon, and a native of Beth-zacar; and he is thought to have prophesied not long before the kingdom of Judah was destroyed, and at the same time with Jeremiah. He abode in Judea while the rest of the Jews were in captivity at Babylon, which captivity he foretold; and died two years before the return of the Jews under Zerubbabel. The style of Habakkuk, says Bishop Lowth, is poetical; but particularly in his song or hymn, ch. 3 which may deservedly be looked upon as a master-piece in its kind. See his 21st Prelection, and Calmet.
