Dummelow's Commentary on the Bible

Isaiah 31:9

And he shall, etc.] RV 'and his rock' (i.e. strength) 'shall pass away by reason of terror.' Ensign] the word denotes a standard, or signal, forming the rallying point of an army. In this context the signal is for the gathering of the foes of the Assyrian. Whose fire] see Isaiah 10:16; Isaiah 10:17. The presence of Jehovah is as a consuming fire to His enemies.
