Jesus states, as again in Matthew 17:12 (cp. Luke 1:17), that John was the Elijah whom the Jews expected in accordance with Malachi 4:5. He hints that they may be unwilling to believe it, partly because of the position in which John now is, but more particularly because they expected a personal return of Elijah himself, and not another prophet with similar authority: see on Matthew 17:10.
