CHAPTER XXVI
_This prophecy, beginning here and ending in the twentieth verse_
_of the_ twenty-eighth _chapter, is a declaration of the judgments_
_of God against Tyre, a very famous commercial city of_
_antiquity, which was taken by Nebuchadnezzar after an arduous_
_siege of thirteen years. Th... [ Continue Reading ]
Verse Ezekiel 26:2. _TYRUS HATH SAID_] From this it would appear that
Jerusalem _had been_ taken, which was on the _fourth_ month of this
year; but it is possible that the prophet speaks of the event
beforehand.
_SHE IS BROKEN_ THAT WAS _THE GATES OF THE PEOPLE_] Jerusalem, a
general emporium.
_I... [ Continue Reading ]
Verse Ezekiel 26:3. _WILL CAUSE MANY NATIONS TO COME UP AGAINST THEE_]
We have already seen that the empire of the Chaldeans was composed of
many different provinces, and that Nebuchadnezzar's army was composed
of soldiers from different nations: these may be the people meant; but
I doubt whether th... [ Continue Reading ]
Verse Ezekiel 26:4. _I WILL ALSO SCRAPE HER DUST FROM HER_] I will
totally destroy her fortifications, and leave her nothing but a barren
rock, as she was before. This cannot refer to the capture of Tyre by
Nebuchadnezzar. It flourished long after his time.... [ Continue Reading ]
Verse Ezekiel 26:5. A PLACE FOR _THE SPREADING OF NETS_] A place for
the habitation of some poor fishermen, who spent the fishing season
there, and were accustomed to dry their nets upon the rocks. See on

Verse Ezekiel 26:6. _AND HER DAUGHTERS_] The places dependent on Tyre.
As there were _two_ places called _Tyre_, one on the _main land_, and
the other on a _rock_ in the sea, opposite to that on the main land,
sometimes the one seems to be spoken of, and sometimes the other. That
on the _land, Palae... [ Continue Reading ]
Verse Ezekiel 26:7. _NEBUCHADREZZAR - KING OF KINGS_] An ancient title
among those proud Asiatic despots [Arabic] _shahinshah_ and _padshah_,
titles still in use.... [ Continue Reading ]
Verse Ezekiel 26:8. _THY DAUGHTERS IN THE FIELD_] This seems to be
spoken of _Palaetyre_, or Tyre on the main land; for _forts, mounts,
engines_ _of war, horses_, and _chariots_ could not be brought to act
against the other.... [ Continue Reading ]
Verse Ezekiel 26:12. _AND THEY SHALL LAY THY STONES AND THY TIMBER AND
THY_ _DUST IN THE MIDST OF THE WATER._] This answers to the taking of
Tyre by Alexander; he actually took the timbers, stones, rubbish, c.
of _old Tyre_, and filled up the space between it and new Tyre, and
thus connected the lat... [ Continue Reading ]
Verse Ezekiel 26:14. _THOU SHALT BE BUILT NO MORE_] If this refer to
Nebuchadnezzar's capture of the city, _old Tyre_ must be intended:
that was destroyed by him, and never rebuilt. But I doubt whether the
whole of this prophecy do not refer to the taking of Tyre by
Alexander, _three hundred_ years... [ Continue Reading ]
Verse Ezekiel 26:15. _THE ISLES SHAKE AT THE SOUND OF THY FALL_] All
those which had traded with this city, which was the grand mart, and
on which they all depended. Her ruin involved them all, and caused
general wailing.... [ Continue Reading ]
Verse Ezekiel 26:16. _THE PRINCES OF THE SEA_] The chief maritime
states, such as _Leptis, Utica, Carthage, Gades_, c. See _Calmet_.... [ Continue Reading ]
Verse Ezekiel 26:17. _WAST STRONG IN THE SEA_] The strength of Tyre
was so great, that Alexander despaired of being able to reduce it
unless he could _fill up that arm of the sea that ran between it and
the_ _main land_. And this work cost his army _seven months_ of
labour.... [ Continue Reading ]
Verse Ezekiel 26:20. _AND I SHALL SET GLORY IN THE LAND OF THE
LIVING._] Judea so called, the land of the living God.... [ Continue Reading ]
Verse Ezekiel 26:21. _YET SHALT THOU NEVER BE FOUND AGAIN_] This is
literally true; there is not the smallest vestige of the _ancient
Tyre_, that which was erected on the main land. Even the ground seems
to have been washed away; and the new Tyre is in nearly a similar
state. I think this prophecy m... [ Continue Reading ]
