Verse Jeremiah 28:2. _THUS SPEAKETH THE LORD_] What awful impudence!
when he knew in his conscience that God had given him no such

Chaldeans to destroy the city, and carry away the rest of the sacred

Verse Jeremiah 28:8. _THE PROPHETS THAT HAVE BEEN BEFORE ME_] Namely,
Joel, Amos, Hosea, Micah, Zephaniah, Nahum, Habakkuk, and others; all

Verse Jeremiah 28:9. _WHEN THE WORD OF THE PROPHET SHALL COME TO
PASS_] Here is the criterion. He is a true prophet who specifies
things that he says shall happen, and also fixes the _time_ of the

He endeavoured by this symbolical act to persuade them of the truth of

Verse Jeremiah 28:13. _YOKES OF IRON._] Instead of Nebuchadnezzar's
yoke _being_ _broken_, this captivity shall be more _severe_ than the
_preceding_. All these nations shall have a _yoke of iron_ on their
neck. He shall _subdue them_, and take all _their property_, even the

Verse Jeremiah 28:15. _HEAR NOW, HANANIAH; THE LORD HATH NOT SENT
THEE_] This was a bold speech in the presence of those priests and
people who were prejudiced in favour of this false prophet, who
prophesied to them smooth things. In such cases men wish to be
