Verse Psalms 132:2. _HOW HE SWARE UNTO THE LORD_] It is only in this
place that we are informed of David's vow to the Lord, relative to the
building of the temple; but we find he had fully purposed the thing.... [ Continue Reading ]
Verse Psalms 132:3. _SURELY I WILL NOT COME_] This must refer to the
_situation_ of the temple; or, as we would express it, he would not
pass another day till he had found out the _ground_ on which to build
the temple, and projected the _plan_, and devised _ways_ and _means_
to execute it. And we fi... [ Continue Reading ]
Verse Psalms 132:5. _THE MIGHTY_ GOD _OF JACOB._] עביר יעקב
_abir yaacob_, the _Mighty One of Jacob_. We have this epithet of God
for the first time, Genesis 49:24. Hence, perhaps, the _abirim_ of the
heathen, the stout ones, the _strong beings_.... [ Continue Reading ]
Verse Psalms 132:6. _LO, WE HAVE HEARD OF IT AT EPHRATAH_] This may be
considered as a continuation of David's vow, as if he had said: As I
had determined to build a temple for the ark, and heard that it was at
_Ephratah_, I went and found it in the _fields of Jaar_, יער; - not
the wood, but Kirjath... [ Continue Reading ]
Verse Psalms 132:8. _ARISE, O LORD, INTO THY REST; THOU AND THE ARK
OF THY_ _STRENGTH._] Using the same expressions which Solomon used
when he dedicated the temple, 2 Chronicles 6:41-14. There are several
difficulties in these passages. _Ephratah_ may mean the _tribe of_
_Ephraim_; and then we may... [ Continue Reading ]

Verse Psalms 132:11. _THE LORD HATH SWORN_] As David sware to the
Lord, so the Lord swears to David, that he will establish his throne,
and place his posterity on it: and that he had respect to David's
Antitype, we learn from St. Peter, Acts 2:30, where see the note. This
verse with the following re... [ Continue Reading ]
Verse Psalms 132:12. _IF THY CHILDREN WILL KEEP MY COVENANT_] This was
conditional with respect to the posterity of David. They have been
driven from the throne, because they did not keep the Lord's covenant,
but the true David is on the throne, and his posterity forms the
genuine Israelites.... [ Continue Reading ]
Verse Psalms 132:13. _THE LORD HATH CHOSEN ZION_] Therefore neither
_Shiloh_ nor _Kirjath-jearim_ is the place of his rest.... [ Continue Reading ]
Verse Psalms 132:14. _THIS_ IS _MY REST FOR EVER_] Here the Christian
Church is most indubitably meant. This is _God's place_ for ever.
After this there never will be another _dispensation_; Christianity
closes and completes all communications from heaven to earth. God has
nothing greater to give to... [ Continue Reading ]
Verse Psalms 132:15. _I WILL ABUNDANTLY BLESS HER PROVISION_] There
shall be an abundant provision of salvation made for mankind in the
Christian Church. Our Lord's _multiplication of the loaves_ was a
_type_ and _proof_ of it.... [ Continue Reading ]
Verse Psalms 132:16. _I WILL ALSO CLOTHE HER PRIESTS_] All Christian
ministers, _with salvation_; this shall appear in all their conduct.
_Salvation - redemption from all sin_ through the blood of the Lamb,
shall be their great and universal message.... [ Continue Reading ]
Verse Psalms 132:17. _THERE WILL I MAKE THE HORN OF DAVID TO BUD_]
_There_, in the _Christian Church_, the power and authority of the
spiritual David shall appear.
_I HAVE ORDAINED A LAMP_] I have taken care to secure a _posterity_,
to which the promises shall be expressly fulfilled.... [ Continue Reading ]
Verse Psalms 132:18. _HIS ENEMIES WILL I CLOTHE WITH SHAME_] Every
opponent of the Christian cause shall be confounded.
_BUT UPON HIMSELF SHALL HIS CROWN FLOURISH._] There shall be no end of
the government of Christ's kingdom. From Psalms 132:11, the spiritual
David and his posterity are the subjec... [ Continue Reading ]
