A well-known and interesting name in the Bible, the beloved wife of the patriarch Jacob, and daughter of Laban. The name itself means sheep. And from being engaged in keeping flocks, in these early days of patriarchal simplicity, it is probable the name was taken on that account. Her history we have, Genesis 29:30, etc. It may be observed, that we have a city in the tribe of Judah called Rachal, or Rachel; probably in honour of this mother in Israel. (1 Samuel 30:29)
