Gezer, Gezrites.

Ancient Canaanite city and its inhabitants. It was taken by Joshua, and allotted to Ephraim, and afterwards to the Kohathites, 1 Chronicles 6:67; 1 Chronicles 1:7; but the ancient inhabitants held possession. It was taken and burnt by Pharaoh as a Canaanitish city, and the site given to his daughter whom Solomon had married. Solomon rebuilt the city. Joshua 10:33; Joshua 12:12; Joshua 16:3, Joshua 1:16; Joshua 21:21; Judges 1:29; 1 Samuel 1:27; 1 Kings 1:9-17. It is called GAZER in 2 Samuel 5:25; 1 Chronicles 1:14. Compare 1 Chronicles 20:4 with 2 Samuel 21:18, 2 Samuel 1:21, GEZER in the former passage refers to GOB in the latter. Gezer is identified with ruins at Tell Jezar, 31 52' N, 34 55' E.
