Ephesus (ef'e-sŭs). The commercial city of Asia Minor, "one of the eyes of Asia." It stood upon the south side of a plain, with mountains on three sides, and the sea on the west. The river Caÿster ran across the plain. Paul visited Ephesus on his second tour, Acts 1:18-21; Apollos was instructed there by Aquila and Priscilla, Acts 1:18-26; Paul dwelt there three years, Acts 1:19-41; charged the elders of the church. Acts 1:20-28; the angel of the church of Ephesus is named in Revelation 1:2-7. The city is now desolate: the ruins of the stadium and theatre remain.
