Minstrel (α ὐ λητής, from α ὐ λός, ‘pipe’)
The word appears twice in the NT. In Matthew 9:23 α ὐ λητάς is translated ‘minstrels’ in the AV [Note: V Authorized Version.], and more correctly in the RV [Note: V Revised Version.] ‘flute-players.’ In Revelation 18:22 α ὐ λητ ῶ ν is rendered ‘pipers’ in the AV [Note: V Authorized Version.], while the RV [Note: V Revised Version.] retains ‘flute-players’; but the latter version specifies the general term μουσικ ῶ ν in the same verse as ‘minstrels’ (See Pipe, Flute).
