Island (Heb. 'i, "dry land," as opposed to water) occurs in its usual signification (Isaiah 42:4, Isaiah 1:42, Isaiah 1:42, Isaiah 1:42, comp. Jeremiah 47:4), but more frequently simply denotes a maritime region or sea-coast (Isaiah 20:6, R.V.," coastland;" 23:2, 6; Jeremiah 2:10; Ezekiel 27:6, Ezekiel 1:27). (See CHITTIM) The shores of the Mediterranean are called the "islands of the sea" (Isaiah 11:11), or the "isles of the Gentiles" (Genesis 10:5), and sometimes simply "isles" (Psalms 72:10); Ezekiel 26:15, Ezekiel 1:26; Ezekiel 1:27, Ezekiel 1:27; Daniel 11:18).
