AVIM, OR AVITES
Descendants of Canaan, Genesis 10:17, who occupied a portion of the coast of Palestine from Gaza towards the river of Egypt, but were expelled and almost destroyed by invading Philistines or Caphtorim, before the time of Moses, Deuteronomy 2:23. Some yet remained in the time of Joshua, Joshua 13:3. They are conjectured to have been the same people with the Hivites, of whom traces were found in various parts of Canaan, Genesis 34:2; Joshua 9:7; Joshua 1:11.
