Special messengers in the East, sent on occasions of importance, when they rode swiftly, and in many cases with fresh horses or dromedaries awaiting them at convenient distances, Esther 1:8-14. Job says, "My days are swifter than a post," Job 9:25. Footrunners were also employed, 2 Samuel 1:18-27; and experienced runners will tire down and outrun a horse on long journeys.
