Yet these may ye eat of all winged creeping things that go upon all fours, which have legs above their feet, wherewith to leap upon the earth;

even these of them ye may eat: the locust after its kind, and the bald locust after its kind, and the cricket after its kind, and the grasshopper after its kind.

Flying insects with four legs must not be eaten, with the exception of those that jump; locusts of all varietiesordinary locusts, bald locusts, crickets, and grasshoppersmay be eaten. All other things that fly and have four feet are forbidden to you.

Levítico 11:20-23 Aquí hay instrucciones acerca de los insectos alados: hay algunos de ellos que son comestibles: dos clases de langostas; el grillo y el saltamontes. Si el insecto no tiene patas con las que pueda saltar, es inmundo. Un buen número de autoridades está de acuerdo en que muchas de las naciones de la antigüedad comían langostas, tanto en Asia como en África, e incluso los antiguos griegos las consideraban muy agradables en harina.

En Arabia (aún hoy) se venden en el mercado, a veces ensartados en cuerdas, a veces por medida, y también se secan y se guardan en bolsas para el invierno. Generalmente se cocinan sobre brasas, o en un plato, o en un horno, o cocido en mantequilla, y comido con sal o con especias y vinagre, la cabeza y las alas y los pies tirados. ( Keil) Cf.
