1 Samuel 13:2

Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel; whereof two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in mount Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.

Saül l'a choisi trois mille hommes d'Israël. Cette main d'hommes choisis était un garde du corps qui était constamment en service, tandis que le reste du peuple était renvoyé jusqu'à ce que leurs services soient nécessaires. Il semble avoir été sa tactique d'attaquer les garnisons philistines dans le pays par différents détachements, plutôt que de risquer un engagement général; et ses premières opérations visaient à émanciper son territoire natal de Benjamin de l'occupation de ces ennemis.
