Deutéronome 21:23

His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.

Un cadavre étant considéré comme une chose impure qui a souillé la personne qui est entrée en contact avec lui, il s'ensuit que le cadavre d'un criminel qui a subi une mort ignominieuse par exécution était, dans la phraséologie juive, une abomination et une malédiction; et en conséquence ce terme est effectivement appliqué à tous les violateurs de la loi divine (Deutéronome 27:15 jusqu'à la fin).
