For out of the north there cometh up a nation against her, which shall make her land desolate, and none shall dwell therein: they shall remove, they shall depart, both man and beast.

Du nord surgit une nation contre elle - à savoir, les Mèdes, au nord de Babylone (Jérémie 51:48). La dévastation de Babylone annoncée ici comprend non seulement celle de Cyrus, mais aussi celle plus totale de Darius, qui prit Babylone par artifice, quand elle s'était révoltée de Perse, et avait massacré impitoyablement les habitants, suspendant 4 000 nobles; aussi la désertion finale de Babylone, due à la Séleucie, ayant été construite à proximité, sous Seleucus Nicator.
