1 Samuele 8:10-18

(10) E Samuele riferì tutte le parole del Signore al popolo che gli chiedeva un re. (11) E disse: Questa sarà la condotta del re che regnerà su di te: prenderà i tuoi figli e li nominerà per sé, per i suoi carri e per essere suoi cavalieri; e alcuni correranno davanti ai suoi carri. (12) E lo nominerà capitani di migliaia e capitani di cinquanta; e li metterà a spigare la sua terra, e a mietere la sua messe, e a fare i suoi strumenti di guerra, e gli strumenti dei suoi carri.

(13) And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers. (14) And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants. (15) And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants. (16) And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.

(17) He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants. (18) And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day.

Lettore! non possiamo spiritualizzare io e te questo passaggio? Quali sono tutte le nostre concupiscenze e corruzioni derivanti dal corpo di peccato e morte che portiamo con noi, ma come l'autorità irritante che è qui descritta? Non so quali siano i tuoi sentimenti: ma so nel mio, che queste passioni corrotte della mia parte non rinnovata, (poiché tale è il corpo dopo tutto l'opera della grazia sull'anima) sono continuamente trascinando l'anima, e come il i carri e i cavalieri di cui qui si parla mi facevano gridare continuamente, come fece san Paolo quando era carico. Romani 7:24 .
