REFLECTIONS

PAUSE, my soul, and with horror contemplate the character of the graceless, even in their highest attainments of knowledge, as instanced in the case of wretched Balaam! What a wretched service must be the service of sin, when in spite of better knowledge, a man will hire himself out to work iniquity with all greediness; and for the sake of a little honour of this dying world, or the sordid gain of it, will go forth in the cause of the devil, against the LORD and against his CHRIST.

Carissimo GES! quale motivo eterno ho io per lodarti, che mentre perseguivo il salario del peccato, tu mi hai concesso il dono di DIO; e mediante il tuo sangue prezioso e la tua giustizia, mi hai liberato dal peccato affinché potessi diventare il servo di DIO. Signore, rendimi molto geloso del mio stesso cuore, affinché vedendo, in un così terribile esempio, fino a che punto gli uomini possono arrivare nella conoscenza di te e delle tue vie, e tuttavia venire privi della grazia di DIO, l'anima mia possa prendi con nient'altro che questo, che CRISTO si forma nel mio cuore l'unica speranza di gloria.
