Isaia 37:30

E questo sarà per te un segno: quest'anno mangerete come cresce da solo; e il secondo anno quello che ne scaturisce: e nel terzo anno seminate, mietete e piantate vigne e ne mangiate il frutto.

Questo (sarà) un segno - un segno che, una volta adempiuto, gli avrebbe assicurato la verità dell'intera profezia circa il rovesciamento del nemico.

Mangerete (questo) anno... I due anni, in cui furono sostenuti dalla crescita spontanea della terra, furono (secondo Rosenmuller) i due in cui la Giudea era già stata devastata da Sennacherib ( Isaia 32:10 ) .

Thus translate, 'Ye did eat (the first year) such as groweth of itself, and in the second year that which springeth of the same, but in this third year sow ye,' etc., for in this year the land shall be delivered from the foe. The fact that Sennacherib moved away his camp immediately after, so that the Jews would have nothing to prevent their sowing that year, in this view shows that the first two years refer to the past, not to the future. Others, referring the first two years to the future, get over the difficulty of Sennacherib's speedy departure, by supposing that year to have been the Sabbatical year and the second year the Jubilee: no indication of this appears in the context.

La versione inglese sembra la migliore. Gli invasori avevano distrutto il raccolto di quell'anno, ed era troppo tardi per seminare per il secondo anno, o non avevano abbastanza grano da seminare sopra il cibo per la semina, quindi quell'anno dovevano dipendere dalla crescita spontanea del mais, l'anno successivo anche su ciò che di per sé scaturì dallo stesso, poi per il terzo anno semineranno e mieteranno. L'adempimento di questa promessa sarebbe stato "un segno" o un impegno che l'esercito assiro era completamente ritirato e che d'ora in poi non avrebbero avuto nulla da temere da quel lato.
