CHRIST THE SAVIOUR OF THE WORLD

1 Giovanni 4:14. We have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.

WERE it announced to us, in a time of war, that the enemies of our country were vanquished, that those who had menaced us with utter destruction were all taken captive, and that we might henceforth enjoy an honourable and lasting peace; our first inquiry would be, What ground is there for crediting the report? If we were assured, that several persons, who had been present at the battle and had seen the captive enemies, were sent by the conqueror on purpose to make known to us the glad tidings, we should be filled with transports of joy, and congratulate one another on the glorious event.

Such tidings, and thus authenticated, we have to declare unto you; not indeed in reference to an earthly enemy, but in reference to our great adversary, the devil; whom Christ, our Almighty Deliverer, has subdued. The Apostles were sent by their victorious Lord to proclaim the news: and they have come to us, affirming that they were eye-witnesses of the truths which they have been commissioned to declare.

They acknowledge, indeed, that “Satan bruised his heel; but they affirm, that he bruised Satan’s head.” Satan so far prevailed as to have him crucified: but by his very death our blessed Lord overcame him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; yes, “on the cross itself he triumphed openly over that wicked adversary, and spoiled all the principalities and powers of hell;” and in his ascension “he led captivity itself captive.”
But that we may ascertain more correctly the nature and truth of their testimony, we shall shew,

I. What evidence we have of the fact reported in the text—

It would divert us too far from our subject to enter into the question of the credibility of the Apostles; suffice it to say, that, as they had no possible inducement to deceive us, so they have never, on any occasion, betrayed the smallest wish to deceive us. Their veracity is unimpeached, and may fully be relied on.
But, it may be asked, Were they themselves well-informed on the points whereof they affirm? We answer, They saw the things which they attest: they did not receive them from the report of others, but were assured of them by ocular demonstration. They saw all which they affirm concerning Christ: they saw,

1. His personal glory—

[Others, even his bitterest enemies, beheld him as a man like unto themselves; but some of his Apostles had ocular proofs of his Godhead: they saw him transfigured on Mount Tabor, his face shining brighter than the meridian sun, and his garments all illumined by the radiant effulgence of his Deity; and they heard the Father’s voice from heaven attesting him to be his only, his beloved Son [Note: Matteo 17:2.

Marco 9:2; Marco 9:7.]. This vision was vouchsafed to them for their more perfect satisfaction: and they record the circumstance in proof, that what they reported concerning him they knew to be true [Note: Giovanni 1:14; 2 Pietro 1:16.]

2. His matchless perfections—

[Not they only, but his very enemies, were astonished at his wisdom, and constrained to confess, that “never man spake like him.” His power and goodness were alike manifest in the authority which he exercised over diseases, devils, and the very elements. Hence, on different occasions, his Disciples expressed their full conviction that he was the promised Messiah, the Saviour of the world: “We believe and are sure that thou art that Christ the Son of the living God [Note: Matteo 16:16; Giovanni 6:69.].”]

3. His shameful death—

[His crucifixion was seen by all: but there were some circumstances connected with his death, which tended very strongly to corroborate the opinion which his Disciples had formed of him. The effusion of blood and water from his wounded side in two distinct streams, particularly impressed them with the idea, that he died to cleanse men, not only from the guilt, but also from the power and pollution, of sin [Note: Giovanni 19:34.

with 1 Giovanni 5:6]. And the prodigies preceding and following his dissolution were such, that the Centurion who attended the crucifixion exclaimed, Truly this was a righteous man, this was the Son of God [Note: Matteo 27:54.Marco 15:39; Luca 23:47.]

4. His triumphant resurrection—

[At the precise moment of his resurrection, none were present except the soldiers who were placed to guard his tomb: but within a few hours he was seen by several of his Disciples: and for the space of forty days he appeared to them on a great variety of occasions [Note: Atti degli Apostoli 1:3.

]. By these manifestations of himself, the incredulity of the Apostles was overcome [Note: Giovanni 20:24.]: and much stress was laid upon them by the Apostles in confirmation of their word [Note: 1 Corinzi 15:3; Atti degli Apostoli 10:40.]

5. His glorious ascension—

Anzi, tanto insistevano su questa circostanza, che, scegliendo un successore di Giuda nell'apostolato, si preoccupavano di avere uno che fosse alla loro altezza in questo particolare [Nota: Atti degli Apostoli 1:21 .]: e, parlando di Cristo, si soffermano su questa circostanza con trionfante soddisfazione [Nota: 1 Giovanni 1:1 .

Fu per qualificare Saulo a portare la stessa convincente testimonianza, che il Signore Gesù gli apparve personalmente sulla via di Damasco [Nota: Atti degli Apostoli 26:16 .]: e, quando il suo ministero fu sottovalutato a causa di la sua presunta inferiorità sotto questi aspetti, fece appello trionfante ai suoi oppositori: “Non sono io un apostolo? Non ho visto Gesù Cristo nostro Signore [Nota: 1 Corinzi 9:1 .]?”

Se poi un tale numero di testimoni fedeli, tutti concordi nella stessa testimonianza, e tutti abilitati a rendere la loro testimonianza da un esame personale delle cose attestate, possono stabilire una qualsiasi verità, dobbiamo confessare che il fatto affermato nel testo è accertato al di là di ogni dubbio, e che “Dio Padre ha mandato suo Figlio perché sia ​​il Salvatore del mondo”.]
Provato il fatto, procediamo a mostrare,

II.

Per quale fine rendiamo la nostra testimonianza rispetto ad essa:

Presentare Cristo come Salvatore del mondo è stata l'unica fatica di tutti gli Apostoli. Lo stesso è anche il nostro benedetto impiego; e ne facciamo il nostro tema costante, o almeno la somma e la sostanza dei nostri discorsi;

1. Affinché tu possa avere una visione giusta dell'amore del Padre,

[Consideriamo la bontà del nostro Dio in ogni cosa che ci circonda: ma non tutta la creazione può mostrarla in uno sguardo così luminoso come la croce di Cristo: là , anche nel volto di Gesù crocifisso, risplende tutta la gloria del nostro Dio. L'amore, in particolare, è rappresentato nei suoi colori più accattivanti. Il dono dell'unico caro Figlio di Dio di morire per l'uomo, fu lo sforzo d'amore più stupendo che mai sia stato, o possa essere, mostrato [Nota: Giovanni 3:16 ; Romani 5:8 .

2. Affinché tu possa rinunciare a tutti i metodi errati di cercare accettazione con lui —

[Se questa gloriosa verità non fosse mai stata rivelata, avremmo potuto fare le stesse domande di Balak [Nota: Michea 6:6 .]. Ma che spazio c'è ora per tali richieste? Disprezziamo questo dono indicibile di Dio? o pensiamo di poter stabilire per la nostra speranza un fondamento più saldo di quello che è posto nel sangue e nella giustizia del Signore Gesù Cristo? — — — Oh, non respingere la misericordia offerta dal tuo Dio! Non dire: 'Il Salvatore del mondo non mi salverà .

' Questo è ciò che dici, infatti, quando ti accingi a "stabilire una tua propria giustizia [Nota: Romani 10:3 .]". Per proteggerti da un errore così fatale, san Paolo ha testimoniato con tutta la forza che poteva esprimere [Nota: Galati 5:2 .

]: e attestiamo anche che non vi è altro fondamento da porre [Nota: 1 Corinzi 3:11 .], né altro nome in cui fidarsi [Nota: Atti degli Apostoli 4:12 .], se non quello di Gesù Cristo.]

3. Affinché possiate abbracciare il Signore Gesù con tutto il vostro cuore,

[Vedilo come mandato dal cielo, proprio dal seno del Padre: consideralo morente al tuo posto e al tuo posto [Nota: Isaia 53:4 ; Isaia 53:6 ; 1 Pietro 3:18 .

]: consideralo come se stesse salvando un mondo in rovina. Puoi fare a meno di amarlo? Puoi trattenerti dal cercare interesse per lui? Non sei pronto a gridare: “Osanna al Figlio di Davide; Osanna nel più alto?" Eccolo, io dico; ammiralo; lo adoro; fidati di lui; “Aderisci a lui con pieno intento di cuore”; “conta tutto tranne una perdita per l'eccellenza della conoscenza di Cristo Gesù tuo Signore.

” Ahimè! sei solo troppo poco colpito dal suo amore; e bisogna ricordarselo continuamente: «Decidiamo dunque, con l'aiuto di Dio, di non conoscere tra voi altro che Gesù Cristo e lui crocifisso», e di porre davanti a voi il suo amore, finché non vi costringa ad amarlo, e ad vivi per lui.]

Conclusione-

[Ascolta ancora una volta la nostra testimonianza. Attestiamo che Cristo è davvero il Figlio di Dio, anche "Emmanuele, Dio con noi". Attestiamo che l'unico incarico per il quale venne, era di salvare un mondo in rovina. Attestiamo che ha fatto tutto ciò che era necessario per la salvezza delle nostre anime; e che “egli è sia capace che disposto a salvare fino in fondo tutti quelli che per mezzo di lui vengono a Dio” — — — Oh, obbligaci a non lamentarci, come fece lui: “Noi attestiamo ciò che abbiamo visto, e voi non ricevete il nostro testimone [Nota: Giovanni 3:11 .

]!” ma vediamo te che lo interroghi, finché puoi dire con i samaritani convertiti: «L'abbiamo visto ('udito') noi stessi, e crediamo che proprio questo è il Cristo, il Salvatore del mondo [Nota: Giovanni 4:42 ]”. È vero, ora non puoi vederlo, come facevano gli Apostoli, faccia a faccia; ma per fede puoi «vedere colui che è invisibile»: e se solo ora lo vedi per fede, un giorno lo vedrai, come sei visto, e «conoscilo, come sei conosciuto».]
