Apocalisse 2:26-29

EPISTLE TO THYATIRA

Apocalisse 2:26. He that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father. And I will give him the morning star. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the Churches.

NOW we come to the encouragement which our Lord gives his faithful people to maintain their integrity. To the steadfast and victorious he promises “the glory and honour and immortality which they seek for.” The terms indeed, in which these promises are conveyed, are not easy to be understood; but, when understood, they are very cheering to the soul: I will, therefore,

I. Explain the promises here given—

The saints at Thyatira had been, as in truth they are in all times and places, subjected to persecution from their enemies: and here our Lord promises them,

1. Honour, when all others shall be abased—

[Now the enemies of Christ reign; and “his people are trodden under foot [Note: Geremia 12:10.]:” but, ere long, the state of things shall be reversed. Even in this world the time is coming when “the saints shall possess the kingdom [Note: Daniele 7:22.

],” and when those who seek to oppress them shall be destroyed with a terrible destruction. Till that period shall arrive, the saints are to bear and suffer all things: but, at the time of the Millennium, when there will be a formidable and almost universal combination against them, God has ordained, that they shall be his instruments to punish his enemies, just as they were when he sent them to extirpate the seven nations of Canaan [Note: Apocalisse 19:11.

]. Foreign as war and bloodshed are to the wishes and feelings of a Christian mind, there will be no more reluctance in the saints then to execute the commission given them, than there was in the angel to slay in one night all the Egyptian first-born, or one hundred and eighty-five thousand of the Assyrian army. Of that period the Psalmist speaks: “Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds: let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hand, to execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishment upon the people; to bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron; to execute upon them the judgment written. This honour have all his saints [Note: Salmi 149:5.].”

But this honour will they possess in a far higher degree in the day of judgment. For then will the Lord Jesus Christ “put all enemies under his feet [Note: 1 Corinzi 15:25.],” and execute vengeance on them; as God has said: “Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel [Note: Salmi 2:9.

].” In the whole of that transaction the saints will bear their part. They will sit with Christ, as his assessors in judgment; and will concur with him in all that he shall do; saying, “True and righteous are his judgments;” and to every one of them we say, “Amen, Amen, Hallelujah, Amen [Note: Apocalisse 19:1.

].” This is so unquestionable a truth, that St. Paul takes for granted that every saint must be well acquainted with it: “Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? yea, know ye not that we shall judge even angels [Note: 1 Corinzi 6:2.]?” Yes, brethren, then will be fulfilled that saying of the Psalmist, “Man, being in honour, abideth not: he is like the beasts that perish.

Like sheep they are laid in the grave; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning [Note: Salmi 49:12; Salmi 49:14.].”

2. Glory, when all others shall be put to shame—

[Ora, gli empi risplendono di splendore; mentre i devoti, se non rinchiusi nelle carceri, sono messi del tutto in secondo piano, in uno stato di oscurità e oscurità. Quando la moda di questo mondo sarà passata come una scena o una visione passeggera, allora i santi "risplenderanno come le stelle del firmamento nei secoli dei secoli [Nota: Daniele 12:3 .]:" allora saranno visti su loro lo splendore luminoso dei raggi del Salvatore; e saranno, per così dire, suoi precursori per annunciare il suo avvento: sì, così «saranno esaltati nella gloria [Nota: Salmi 112:8 .

];” mentre “i malvagi”, che un tempo li trattavano con disprezzo e disprezzo, “taceranno nelle tenebre [Nota: 1 Samuele 2:8 .].”]

Dopo aver spiegato le promesse, ora lo farò

Affidali alla tua più attenta considerazione:

Lasciate che le vostre menti, fratelli miei, siano all'altezza dell'occasione. Vedi, in queste promesse,

1. Quale incoraggiamento danno ai seguaci di Cristo:

[Il popolo del Signore ha, in questo mondo, la propria croce da portare, ed è destinato a seguire il suo Divin Maestro attraverso molte tribolazioni: ma è sicuro che, «se soffrirà con lui, regnerà anche con lui [Nota: 2 Timoteo 2:12 .]”, e che non il più meschino dei loro servigi sarà senza ricompensa [Nota: Matteo 10:42 .

]”. E qui vorrei richiamare in modo particolare la vostra attenzione sul parallelo che lo stesso Signore ha tracciato nel nostro testo: «A lui darò... così come ho ricevuto dal Padre mio». Sì, ogni cosa che Dio Padre ha dato al Figlio suo, come ricompensa dei suoi servizi, ce la darà, nella misura in cui siamo capaci di riceverla e di goderne. Il Padre gli ha dato un trono e un regno? tale volontà Cristo conferirà anche a noi.

Egli stesso dice: “Vi do un regno, come il Padre mio ha stabilito per me [Nota: Luca 22:29 .]:” e ancora; “A colui che vince, concederò di sedere con me sul mio trono, come anch'io ho vinto, e sono posto presso il Padre mio sul suo trono [Nota: Apocalisse 3:21 .

]”. Non c'è parte «della gloria che il Padre suo gli ha dato, che non ci darà, secondo le nostre capacità [Nota: Giovanni 17:22 .]». E la prospettiva di tutto ciò non agirà su di noi, come ha operato su Cristo stesso, quando, per la «gioia che gli era posta davanti, sopportò la croce e disprezzò la vergogna, finché finalmente si sedette alla destra mano del trono di Dio [Nota: Ebrei 12:2 .

]?" Dico, quindi, “considerate colui che ha sopportato tale contraddizione dei peccatori contro se stesso, affinché non siate stanchi e sfiniti nella vostra mente [Nota: Ebrei 12:3 .] — — —]

2. Che ricompensa offrono per i nostri poveri servizi:

[Penso che, se non si fosse detto altro che che il suo popolo fedele avesse cancellato ogni sua colpa ed essere liberato dai giudizi che ha così riccamente meritato, sarebbe stata un'ampia ricompensa per tutto ciò che avremmo potuto fare o soffri per lui in questa vita. Supponiamo che una tale proposta sia stata ora fatta a uno degli angeli caduti, o al ricco che ora sta alzando gli occhi nei tormenti infernali; non accetterebbe volentieri l'offerta, e non considererebbe ben ripagate tutte le sue future fatiche, anche se nient'altro che l'annientamento lo attendeva una volta svolto il suo compito? Guardiamo le nostre opere, e vediamo quali sono: dimmi se ce n'è una per la quale non arrossisci, per i suoi difetti? e se, se fossero stati mille volte più perfetti, non vi sareste ancora considerati “servi inutili [Nota:Luca 17:10 .

]?" Ma non è così che Dio magnifica la sua grazia. No: non dà in così scarsa misura ai suoi figli prediletti; né stima così i loro poveri servizi imperfetti. Non considera tutta la gloria e la felicità del cielo troppo grandi per loro. Li fa suoi stessi eredi, «eredi di Dio e coeredi di Cristo; affinché, avendo sofferto con lui, siano anche glorificati insieme [Nota: Romani 8:17 .

]”. In verità, nell'ultimo giorno i santi assomiglieranno tutti a Cristo. Di lui si dice che «colpirà le nazioni e le dominerà con scettro di ferro; e calpestare il torchio della fierezza e dell'ira di Dio Onnipotente [Nota: Apocalisse 19:15 .]”. Anche lui dice di se stesso: “Io sono la radice e la progenie di Davide, e la stella luminosa e mattutina [Nota: Apocalisse 22:16 .

]”. E questo è l'onore , e questa è la gloria , che Egli ha promesso di conferire a noi. Come Giosuè comandò ai capitani del suo esercito di venire a mettere i piedi sul collo dei re vinti [Nota: Giosuè 10:24 .], così il Gran Capitano della nostra salvezza farà partecipare coloro che hanno combattuto sotto i suoi stendardi gloria e felicità dei suoi trionfi.

Dimmi, allora, se non conviene a noi «conservare le sue opere» con ogni diligenza; contabilità "nessun comandamento grave"; né esitare, se chiamato ad esso, a dare la nostra vita per amor suo? Teniamoli allora, fratelli miei, sì, e conserviamoli tutti , e “fino alla fine”. «Non ci stanchiamo mai di fare il bene; poiché a suo tempo mieteremo, se non veniamo meno [Nota: Galati 6:9 .

]”. Posso aggiungere inoltre che «ognuno riceverà la propria ricompensa secondo la propria fatica [Nota: 1 Corinzi 3:8 .]». Senza dubbio ci sarà una differenza nelle ricompense, così come nelle punizioni, degli uomini in una vita futura: perché «una stella sarà diversa da un'altra stella in gloria [Nota: 1 Corinzi 15:41 .

]”. E questo può ben stimolarci al massimo sforzo possibile al servizio del nostro Dio. Ma per il più piccolo e meschino dei santi la ricompensa sarà inconcepibilmente grande: perché l'ultimo in gloria «risplenderà come il sole nel regno del Padre loro, nei secoli dei secoli [Nota: Matteo 13:43 .]. ”]
