THE REST THAT REMAINS FOR GOD’S PEOPLE

Ebrei 4:9. There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.

THE servants of God possess many distinguished privileges. Their state in this world is far happier than that of the ungodly; but there is an infinitely richer portion reserved for them hereafter. To this David had respect in that awful denunciation [Note: Salmi 95:11.], whence it appears, that though prefigured by other rests, it remains yet to be enjoyed [Note: The Apostle’s argument seems to be this: God instituted a day of rest in commemoration of his having ceased from his works of creation.

And many centuries afterwards he promised a rest to his people in the land of Canaan. But that rest was only typical of a more glorious sabbath, of which David spake a long time after the other had been enjoyed. From hence the Apostle concludes that there must yet be a rest, or Σαββατισμὸς (for he changes the word which he had before used, in order more strongly to intimate the analogy between the different rests there spoken of) remaining for the people of God.].

I. Who are the people of God?

This title cannot belong to all indiscriminately—
[The greater part of the world are idolatrous heathens. The generality of those who are called Christians are ignorant of God. Impiety and profaneness abound in every place: this indisputably proves the Apostle’s assertion [Note: Romani 9:6.]. The sinful works of men plainly shew whose people they are [Note: 1 Giovanni 3:8; Giovanni 8:44.

]; nor do all who “profess godliness” really belong to God [Note: Romani 2:28; Tito 1:16.]. There are many who deceive both themselves and others [Note: Apocalisse 3:1.Giacomo 1:26.]

Those who alone have a right to it are described by God himself [Note: Filippesi 3:3.].

They “worship God in the Spirit”—
[It is the characteristic of God’s enemies that they neglect prayer [Note: Salmi 53:4.]: nor will formal services prove us to be God’s people [Note: Matteo 15:8.]. No worship is acceptable to him but that which is spiritual [Note: Giovanni 4:23.]. His faithful servants are importunate at the throne of grace [Note: Efesini 6:18.]

They “rejoice in Christ Jesus”—
[They do not merely acknowledge him to be the Messiah: they make daily application to him as the only ground of their hopes. Their hearts are lifted up with devout affection towards him. They delight in him as their all-sufficient Redeemer [Note: 1 Pietro 1:8.]

They “have no confidence in the flesh”—
[They are deeply convinced that “in them dwelleth no good thing.” They see the folly of trusting to their own strength or wisdom [Note: Proverbi 3:5.]. They acquiesce fully in Solomon’s direction [Note: Proverbi 28:26.]—. They look for every thing in Christ alone [Note: 1 Corinzi 1:30.]

To these belong many glorious privileges.

II.

What is the rest which remaineth for them?

In qualche modo sono già entrati in riposo [Nota: Ebrei 4:3 .]—

[Sono liberati dai terrori di una coscienza sporca [Nota: Ebrei 10:22 .]. Provano gioia nelle ordinanze e nei sabati. Le loro menti sono pienamente soddisfatte della salvezza del Vangelo. Sperimentano la verità della promessa di nostro Signore [Nota: Matteo 11:28 .]—.]

Ma il resto che li attende è di gran lunga superiore a quello che ora
possiedono - Godranno della libertà da tutte le fatiche e le pene -
[Sono costretti a lavorare finché sono nel mondo. Tutta la loro vita assomiglia a una razza oa una guerra. Non possono ottenere nulla senza faticose fatiche [Nota: Matteo 11:12 .

]: e di necessità sono circondati da molti dolori [Nota: Atti degli Apostoli 14:22 .]. Ma in cielo cesseranno dalle loro fatiche [Nota: Apocalisse 14:13 .]: né la loro felicità avrà alcun intervallo o lega [Nota: Apocalisse 21:4 .]

Saranno esenti da ogni influenza del peccato o della tentazione —
[Il peccato ora contamina i loro migliori servizi. Satana è anche instancabile nei suoi sforzi per corromperli [Nota: 2 Corinzi 11:3 .]. Queste sono fonti di molto dolore per loro al momento. Ma le anime di tutti in cielo sono rese perfette [Nota: Ebrei 12:23 .

]: né può entrare alcuna cosa impura per contaminarli [Nota: Apocalisse 21:27 .]. Il loro trionfo sarà completo ed eterno [Nota: Isaia 60:20 .]

Abiteranno nell'immediata presenza del loro Dio—
[La loro capacità di godere di Dio sarà meravigliosamente ampliata: lo vedranno non oscuramente, come ora, ma faccia a faccia [Nota: 1 Corinzi 13:12 .]. La gloria del Salvatore sarà oggetto della loro più devota ammirazione [Nota: Giovanni 17:24 .

]. La loro gioia per lui supererà le loro attuali concezioni [Nota: Salmi 16:11 .]. Sapranno che la loro felicità sarà eterna [Nota: Apocalisse 22:3 .]. Allora ogni desiderio del loro cuore sarà pienamente soddisfatto [Nota: Salmi 17:15 .]

Dedurre—

Com'è desiderabile essere annoverato tra il popolo di Dio!

[Il resto descritto è solo la parte di loro. Dio stesso dichiara che i malvagi non vi partecipano [Nota: Isaia 57:21 .]: la loro porzione sarà molto diversa [Nota: Salmi 11:6 .], e anche la sua durata sarà infinita [Nota: Apocalisse 14:11 .

]. Chi allora non desidererebbe essere annoverato tra i santi? Chi non desidera partecipare alla propria eredità? Ma dobbiamo prima essere conformi al loro carattere. Dobbiamo rinunciare alla fiducia in noi stessi e credere in Cristo. Era l'incredulità che escludeva gli israeliti da Canaan [Nota: Ebrei 3:18 .]. Temiamo che lo stesso principio malvagio non ci derubi del riposo celeste [Nota: Ebrei 4:1 ; Ebrei 4:11 .]

2. Con quale gioia il popolo di Dio attende la morte!

[L'ora della morte è spesso oggetto di terrore per i devoti, ma dovrebbe essere accolta come una stagione di gioia. Il contadino non si rallegra del suo salario, il marinaio nel suo rifugio, il soldato nel bottino della vittoria? Molto di più il cristiano dovrebbe rallegrarsi nell'avvicinarsi del suo riposo. Andiamo dunque a lungo dopo di essa, come il santo Apostolo [Nota: 2 Corinzi 5:2 .

]; e fatichiamoci a raggiungerlo con piena fiducia di successo [Nota: 2 Corinzi 5:6 ; 2 Corinzi 5:8 .]
